IMPROV | LARGE ENSEMBLE | COMBO | DAILY JAM | JAZZ HISTORY
Tennessee’s rich cultural history and deep rooted jazz & blues community provides us with an incredible opportunity to serve as a gateway to youth who have an interest in improvisation, jazz theory and harmony, reharmonization, transcription, big band jazz, jazz combo, and jazz history.
LARGE ENSEMBLES | LITERATURE & REP | IMPROVISATION | MOVEMENT & CHOREO
Our festival provides students with a highly intense musical theatre focus, where each student is grouped into a large ensemble and given one week to perform a full musical revue, with acting, singing, movement and choreography. Festival Revues feature music and drama from a variety of genres and time periods and feature each of the MTs in our Friday evening performance. Junior & Senior MTs are expected to learn a full song to add to their repertoire portfolio to be performed during the festival.
Wind Ensemble & Chamber Winds
FESTIVAL WINDS | BRASS CHOIR | SAXOPHONE ENSEMBLE | FLUTE CHOIR | WOODWIND QUINTET
Festival Winds pays homage to our country’s historic wind band tradition, performing famous masterpieces of the last century and modern works by new composers. Chamber wind ensembles enable our students to focus on solo and ensemble techniques in ensembles that are unique to their instrument family. These are ensembles that share directing responsibilities with guest artists, faculty, and sometimes even students!
Voice / Group Singing
OPERA ENSEMBLE | POPULAR & JAZZ VOICE | MADRIGALS & A CAPPELLA ENSEMBLE | FESTIVAL CHOIR
Opera is a rare opportunity here in Tennessee, so we aim to provide as intensive an opera experience as we can knowing it may be the only opera education our students receive all year. We bring in some of the finest educators in the country to assist with vocal development, IPA & pronunciation, and repertoire study for what amounts to an incredible evening of opera vignettes, performed by our amazing students. Madrigals & A Cappella give our students the opportunity to work & perform alongside other singers in an a cappella ensemble setting. Genres include pop music, medieval & renaissance music, baroque music, and contemporary music, vocal jazz, and atmospheric music. TNSMF also features a festival-wide choir for all students to participate, regardless of their vocal experience or ability.
FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA | CHAMBER STRINGS | PERFORMANCE CLASS
TNSMF’s Strings program offers large & small ensemble opportunities where students can play orchestral repertoire, chamber repertoire, and pop music alike. Festival Orchestra typically performs music from famous films, operas, or orchestral works made famous by well known composers. Chamber Strings & Performance Class enable string players to focus on developing their independent sound and a practice routine that will help them improve throughout the school year.
PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE | STEEL PAN BAND
Anyone related to a percussionist will tell you…percussionists are a breed of their own. Our versatile percussion program has students learning mallets, orchestral percussion, drumline, steel pan, and world percussion, in solo repertoire & group ensemble settings. Percussion performances get the people on their feet and often push the boundaries of what we are accustomed to when viewing a “traditional” music experience. Our percussion teachers feature guest artists and professors from around the state with international touring/teaching schedules and come to work with our highly engaged, totally obsessed group of percussionists!
INTRO TO PIANO | INTERMEDIATE PIANO | ADVANCED PIANO COLLABORATIVE PIANO
TNSMF’s piano studio is a tight-knit group of students focused on a versatile array of genres including jazz, classical, and pop music. Students will work in group settings where they will work together to develop their abilities collaboratively within the short span of a week. Students will work on sight-reading, developing a practice routine, and gaining comfort with the physical side of playing the piano including posture & Alexander technique.
Songwriting, Composition, & Music Theory
MUSIC THEORY 1-4 | INTRO TO SONGWRITING & COMP | ADVANCED SONGWRITING* | ARRANGING | HISTORY OF POP
